Ukrainians have lived on the territory of present-day Ukraine for millennia. The roots of the Ukrainian nation are found in the Trypillian culture that evolved in the Middle Dnipro region in the third millennium B.C., the heritage of the Scythian tribes, and the Chernyakhiv culture.

According to historical literature (The Primary Chronicle, 1097), Kyiv was founded by three brothers of the Slavic Polianian tribe - the brothers Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv, and their sister Lybid`. A monument, erected in their honor, stands on the bank of the River Dnipro. The capital of Ukraine named after the eldest brother, celebrated its 1500th anniversary in 1982.
